Do Pheromones really work?

… Or are they a scam?

Pheromones are lately a huge boom on the internet, mainly because of the commercialization of pheromone-based perfumes and fragrances that, as the companies that produce them tell us, can bring to you more attention from the opposite sex. No need to say that they spread virally all over the internet, mainly because of the insecure nature of people in the field of love. Surely, a fragrance that is a “chick magnet” may be what really completes a great personality. Obviously the first question that pops in the mind is: “Does it really work?”

The question is double sided. If you ask: “Do pheromones work?”, then the answer is yes. In fact, pheromones are an inscindible part of our organism and we are influenced by them all the time, even if we do not really get it. They have been a big piece of the puzzle of evolution: in fact, what really attracts us to a partner is the release of pheromones. Scientific studies have discovered that a person that is more attractive to the other sex has a major production of pheromones compared to other that are less attractive to the other sex. Mind that being attractive doesn’t relate to the fact of being beautiful: it is not uncommon that men and women that are not considered very beautiful have some sex appeal to them (Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, and a whole lot more). Studies have demonstrated that extracts from respectively male and female sweat have an aphrodisiac effect on the other sex, leading sometimes to vriation on the ovulation of women.

Also, it is a consolidated scientific theory that animals have extremely strong responses to pheromones. Dogs know that there is a female ready for sex from very far distances only from the smell of pheromones. Insects are also extremely sensible to them, as only one drop of pheromones from a single female can recall a whole storm of males ready for copulation.

The other side of the question, and what really interests us here, is: “Do pheromone perfumes really work?” This is a more complex question. There are no scientific studies done on this, and there is no real, set int he stone proof that pheromone perfumes do really work.

BUT.

There are some claims that these pheromone perfumes can really work. Many people, after using them, swear that they got a lot more attention from the opposite sex. If it is a proof that pheromone perfumes really work or it is mere autosuggestion, it is difficult to find out. From a theoretical point of view there are a lot of reasons why it should work, but in practice it is a lot more difficult to understand if it really works or not, mainly because of subjectivity and the difficulty of doing a field testing.

In conclusion, testing pheromone perfumes will not hurt anyone: the fragrances are excellent, and if there is some “side” effect, it is welcome. It may be your secret weapon for a date, but do not expect to pull out men and women out of the streets with it!
